It’s the last day of Movember, and I decided to take my last pic by the enormously large statue of Marilyn Monroe up the street. As creepy as I may seem, I’m not the guy in charge of envisioning the underwear of a pop icon and spend days sculpting & painting it.

This year we finally got a regular sized Christmas tree to call our own. And with that comes a need for ornaments, especially since Rebecca has 20+ Barbie ones from over the years. My parents have been collecting this series since I was a baby, so it seemed fitting to continue the tradition at our place. Best part? Looks like they’re having a moustache contest.

So every year I do a reasonably tall moustache, but this year it’s short and for some reason the blonde nature of it isn’t showing the progress I wanted to have. So the question is, would it be cheating to use a performance-enhancing drug like hair dye to show this thing off? And if it isn’t, what color should I color it?

One thing I really enjoy as I do another year of Movember is the fact that the sheer number of participants and scale that it has become. For instance, my member number is 10,100 and new recruits are somewhere in the 1.8 million range. Not only that, the cause is a highlight of a commercial for Google’s Chrome browser.

Like every Movember, men face the possibility that during the month they will encounter a social setting where it’s tough to explain your face. Last year it was a client meeting. This year is my friend’s wedding. I’ve been stalling on keeping my moustache free of a beard, but I come into a debate about the possibility of being “that guy” in the background of their wedding photos.

The wedding’s in Florida and I said I’d help take photos and whatnot, to which I had the realization that I have the potential to be the sweaty amateur photographer with a dirty moustache around lots of people (and children) I don’t know.

Movember has posted yours truly into their site gallery, giving me a little more promotional lovin’. A few people at work gave me some garbage for my horrible Photoshopping of the number 5 on my face, but there was no manipulation involved. That’s all hard work and steady hands, and yes my facial hair has inconsistent color. Proof:

When I started doing Movember back 5 years ago it was more of a silly, childish fundraiser for a good cause. I believed that cancer could only happen to grandparents, and back then it was never really a concern to me.

My motivation every year is to create a moustache that will not only entertain people for donations, but they’ve never meant much more than that. This time around I’m growing one in honor of my Uncle Paul, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. It’s rare that you’ll know someone your whole life who always donned a moustache for 30 years, but he’s that type of guy. Every Thanksgiving he was more than willing to crack jokes about my facial hair monstrosities, and it’s one of those small moments I’ll remember him by.

So for this year, I’m growing a moustache to hopefully live up to his standards.

It’s been a long month, and I’ve learned a lot from this year’s Movember:

Moustache wax is not the same as hair products. You need patience to groom it, and my skills with the tiny comb might come in handy some day.
You definitely get more scared/concerned looks from bystanders than growing one from scratch. I secretly hoped to make it on peopleofwalmart.com
Client meetings and business trips run better after you clear the air about your mustachioed intentions.
Airport security takes a little longer look at your ID before letting you proceed.
I really need some Just For Men to make this blond thing match the rest of the hair on my head.
Don’t let your wife take you to dance studios to see an old friend. My moustache near those high school girls makes you feel like a pervert, even if you’re staring at the ground the whole time.
Not only did I stop wearing a hat to work, but dress shirts, ties, and dress shoes became the norm. This thing makes me feel classy, but not enough to wear a monocle.
No matter how many times I do it, twirling my fingers around the ’stache scares my wife and family.

Thanks to all who have donated so far. This year I’ve almost doubled my best total, which is truly incredible and I’m very thankful for your support.
